The San Juan Mountains are the heart of southwestern Colorado. With 13 peaks over 14,000 feet high, they are some of the most majestic mountains in the country. Greyrock Peak is almost 12,500 feet high and lies northwest of the Purgatory Ski Area. Click to enlarge Greyrock Peak

A sign using the name “Million Dollar Highway” was erected in Ironton Park in 1921 after just over a million dollars was spent to improve the wagon road to allow automobile traffic.
The toll road between Ouray and Ironton Park was used to transport people, supplies and ore at rates of $3.75 for a wagon with two animals, $.75 for a horse, and $.35 for a pack animal.

Aspens are the most widely distributed tree in North America ranging from Alaska to Newfoundland and south to New Mexico. .Along the Million Dollar Highway, Red Mountain Pass reaches an elevation of 11,075. Just north of the tightest switchbacks on the highway is a area of stunning aspen and mountain scenery. Click to enlarge Red Mountain Pass.
